Nyx knew what to pack, she helped Phaen before she left, even sat on the chest so it would lock...
The six year old decided everyone had gotten too quiet, busy with older things... she could do older things... she could hunt the great blue snake, the one that ate up the people she was missing. It was a small idea that kept growing, and today it could no longer be ignored. Finding the great blue snake and killing it so she wouldn't have to miss anyone else was the most important thing on Nyx's mind. She built the snake in the room she shared with Ian, stabbing it over and over with her black wax knife, just like in all the pictures she had stuffed under Ian's bed, the blue snake was all Nyx thought about anymore...
There was a leather satchel in the armoire, in it she fit her blue bear, her coloured wax, a small blanket off the bed in her and Josh's room and the pillow from under Phaen's bed the one she shared with Mei. Into the side pockets she stuffed fruit and cookies from the kitchen, set a plate of cookies out for the Brownies so they wouldn't follow her, and pulled out her paper to write Ian a note.
With heavy hand holding her black wax she wrote, "Gone to find the blue snakes, be back soon." under it she signed her name in all capital letters, "NYX." Standing at the door to her room she went over the list of things she had to do before leaving the Freehold:
- Something to eat
- Warm boots and gloves
- Leave a note for Ian
- Ditch the Brownies
- ... have an adult with her
It weighed on her mind a few moments, she wasn't to leave the Freehold without James, or Berry, or Angua, or Ian, or Mei or someone... But they all didn't seem to see the blue snakes like she did, they weren't missing their mom's or dad's or aunt's... They had even stopped talking about the missing people in Nyx's little life. Nyx knew she was going to get in trouble, but she thought it would be ok, if no one else went missing, she would get in trouble for that.
Nyx made her way out into the snow covered canyon the Freehold was in, little footprints lead off to the east to the path down the mountain...
Nyx didn't see the ice blue eyes of the white wolf follow her out of the canyon from the shadow of the cliff walls.
