Elle Nightwing: Journal
*A black journal with grooves set in the cover. Small silver pegs rest in the grooves, and can be moved around. It appears to be an intricate puzzle.*

I was quite surprised the other day when I was left a gift from Mr. Rayne. It was complete with a simple story about where it came from. It is an attractive oil lamp, and I have placed it near my bed.
This is still surprising to me in that I feel I had embarrassed him last we met. Which was, of course, also the first time we met. I had made the wrong assumption about him and Miss Kanath and had inadvertently created an awkward situation for him.
I do hope he visits the shop again soon. There should be an exchange of stories in which we may both enjoy, and I do believe Aleister would wish Mr. Rayne to feed him another plump rat.
Aleister is melancholy today, and I am not certain as to why. Perhaps tomorrow he will be his old rotten self.

Aleister seems to have stopped growing, at least for now. He and Judith still bicker and I have to sweep apples from the floor often. I have viewed this as something the new building needs. What else could be better for it than small rotting apples?
Mister Rayne’s gift has been doing exceptionally well despite the attack on it. He left so quickly that he did not take it with him. I do not know what was so important, but I think he may have forgotten who I was for he kissed me hastily in the cheek before he left. I was unaware we were on such a friendly level. It is my belief he was mistaken.
Aleister was melancholy for a few days after Mister Rayne left. I sometimes wonder if he would be as melancholy if I were to leave for a while. I do not have any reason to leave though. I imagine there would be some sort of plant massacre if I did leave.
The new building for the Curiosity Shoppe is spacious. I have plenty of room for display and storage. Now I have to make myself do the difficult task of organizing displays and preparing for the re-opening. I am content in the thought that all will go well. At least well enough for someone like me.
Ah, they are fighting again. I do complain about it sometimes, but I would miss it if they stopped.

Miss Sian’s Book Faire went well, and while I did miss Aleister and Judith, I managed to make a small profit. They forgave me but not until after Aleister made a small tear in the sleeve of my dress. He is such a moody plant.
I have received news from Miss Davis about an auction in Britain. She said the goods come from the home of a recluse who died. No one knew he was dead until one of his neighbors decided to check on him. Apparently she sometimes brought him a pie as she felt sorry for the man.
They believe he had died of a heart attack some weeks back. Miss Davis believes it was something else. She said he had the look of fear in his eyes. I did not ask her how she knew. It does make one wonder if it was something that frightened him into a heart attack. The questions then, I suppose, is what?
Regardless, she said he had some painting she felt I might have interest in, and that he had many other items that might hold some value to me. She is usually right about this sort, and often has the goods I would indeed trade or buy.
I might have to employ the aid of Mister Rowley for this one as well.

Last night I attended the Everthorne Court. I believe it was the second time I had ever attended. Mr. Rayne was there to keep me company and answer a couple of questions I had. I do not look forward to ever attending again. There was Mr. Leith with his constant stream of words, some growling woman who I vaguely remember being with a wolf in my Shoppe, and a man who appeared out of nowhere but nonetheless right next to me. That one was an enemy of Everthorne though, and Mr. Rayne helped keep me away from him.
I do believe I will refrain from attending Court here on out. However, Aleister and I look forward to seeing Mr. Rayne again. The books and chests in the way of the door are becoming a problem. Mr. Rayne even tripped and stumbled over the books as he left.
Time to move Aleister to a new pot. He always bites me when I do this, but the other one is cracked and needs to be replaced. He will just have to get over it.
